Rina Shapira

Bio

I was born in Hungary and grew up in Israel as a bilingual child. By my early teens I added English to my repertory of actively-used languages; later came French and some German and Spanish too. Language and verbal expression has always been in the forefront of my interests and paved the path of my academic pursuits in Linguistics and literature, as well as my lifelong attraction to the written word.

My writing initially focused on academic papers and later on business presentations. After my retirement I started engaging in writing for my own enjoyment, which initially included numerous travel diaries sprinkled with artistic nature images, photography being my other lifelong creative passion. I also started volunteering at Simon Wiesenthal’s Museum of Tolerance as a tour guide and facilitator. During this time, I wrote a series of short pieces inspired by my mother’s Holocaust experience and its effect on my life, focusing on a recipe collection she wrote during her time in concentration camp. Eventually, I was inspired to weave these short pieces into a memoir. Writing on the broader canvas brought forth deeper experiences and subtler memories. These are illustrated by the documentary and constructed photographs that make up Holding Onto A Flame.
